Our first 3 days honestly felt like we did so much of what we came to do - getting the extra time to add on seeing more of the countryside was such a gift! We rented a car and drove west so we could see Stonehenge. So cool right!? It was a right handed drive car, which was a challenge to get used to. Sitting in the front left seat as a passenger was really weird. It felt like I should be driving!
We got started but couldn't find a place to get some breakfast, so I waited to give the boys their dramamine for the drive. Mistake! Poor David got car sick in the first 30-45 min of our day, but luckily we still had travel a vomit bag. Packing necessity! After some English McDonalds (which was an experience) we were back on the road with our medicine and feeling much better.
It was a couple of hours drive out to the middle of a field to see Stonehenge. I didn't know how this was organized, but I had read that you could park and walk up for free. So that is what we did. It was really awesome walking in the countryside. Not too hot but lovely fresh air. We saw some British hippies living in trailers parked on this road; kids running around filthy with no shoes. It was really strange, but thankfully the majority of the walking was just us like these pictures.
You can see in the background that people were able to get a whole lot closer than we could. This was the pay to park option with tickets that were $100/person. So we stood at the distance, and saved ourselves $600-700. It seems silly to go all that way and not get as close as you can, but at the end of the day we still saw it. And we enjoyed ourselves!
Family picture with Stonehenge! James on his tip toes to be taller than his Dad. haha!
Such beautiful countryside and a clear blue sky. Who would have thought you'd find simple beauty like this next to one of the wonders of the world.
One more bucket list item crossed off! It does feel a little unreal to say, "we've seen Stonehenge." But I will tell you, if we ever get the chance to go back and walk up around the stones in the special tour, that would be worth doing. It really does make a big difference when you see things up close, and had we known how far it would have been maybe we would have chosen differently.
We stayed that night in a local town and rented two rooms next to one another. It was a little bed and breakfast place with a couple of rooms added on the back of the house. We could walk down the street to a pub for dinner, and I remember the motel feel of the rooms we got. The pub we had dinner at in the town was also memorable, because we sat down and didn't realize we had to order from the bar. We were so patient waiting, and then we realized. Thankfully we weren't in a hurry! It's funny to remember the pictures in your mind of a place you were sitting, or the carpet on the floor. I don't feel like I have a very good memory, but this is encouraging me that I do remember this.
Thank you Lord for your protection driving and for the beauty we were able to enjoy!
